Skin needs for different seasons

Skin needs for different seasons

Oh Spring! Such a beautiful season (for those that live in places that get all the seasons). In our case spring in Puerto Rico is just warm and wet, typical of an island life. We do get the famous May showers and we believe that if we get the first rain in May it’ll bring us luck for the rest of the year (check with mom). When it comes to the changes in season in Puerto Rico not much is seen in difference. It is hot and humid, which combined with our genetics can lead to oily or dry skin.

Now let's take a look at the Northern and Southern Hemisphere which does have all 4 seasons and how their seasons may impact the skin.

Seasons: Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter

The four seasons—spring, summer, autumn (fall), and winter—bring distinct weather patterns: temperature and humidity fluctuations that affect our skin's ability to stay hydrated and balanced.

Northern Hemisphere:

  • Spring: As temperatures rise and humidity increases, skin may transition from dry to normal or oily.
  • Summer: Hot and humid weather can lead to increased oil production, clogged pores, and breakouts. Sun exposure becomes a major concern.
  • Autumn (Fall): As temperatures drop and humidity decreases, skin may become drier and more prone to irritation.
  • Winter: Cold, dry air, indoor heating, and harsh winds can severely dehydrate the skin, leading to dryness, flakiness, and cracking.

Southern Hemisphere:

  • Spring: The Southern Hemisphere experiences a similar transition as the Northern Hemisphere in Autumn. Skin may become drier and more prone to irritation as temperatures fall and humidity decreases.
  • Summer: This corresponds to winter in the Northern Hemisphere. Hot and humid weather can lead to increased oil production, clogged pores, and breakouts. Sun exposure is still a major concern.
  • Autumn (Fall): Similar to Spring in the Northern Hemisphere. As temperatures rise and humidity increases, skin may transition from dry to normal or oily.
  • Winter: This corresponds to Summer in the Northern Hemisphere. Cold, dry air, indoor heating, and harsh winds can severely dehydrate the skin, leading to dryness, flakiness, and cracking.

Adapting Your Skincare Routine:

Regardless of your hemisphere, understanding seasonal changes is key to maintaining healthy skin. Here's how to adjust your routine:

Summer (Northern/Southern Hemisphere):

  • Lightweight Moisturizer: Opt for lightweight, oil-free moisturizers to avoid clogging pores.
  • Oil-Control Cleanser: Use a cleanser formulated to remove excess oil.
  • Sunscreen: Daily SPF 30 or higher is crucial to prevent sun damage.
  • Chemical Exfoliant (occasionally): Use a gentle chemical exfoliant to remove dead skin cells and prevent breakouts.

Autumn/Spring (Depending on Hemisphere):

  • Hydrating Cleanser: Transition to a moisturizing cleanser to avoid stripping your skin's natural oils.
  • Humectant Serum: Incorporate a serum with humectants (like hyaluronic acid) to attract and retain moisture.

Winter (Northern/Southern Hemisphere):

  • Rich Moisturizer: Use a richer, creamier moisturizer to combat dryness.
  • Humectant Serum: Continue using a humectant serum for deep hydration.
  • Occasional Gentle Exfoliation: Remove dry, dead skin cells gently with a chemical exfoliant.
  • Lip Balm: Protect your lips from dryness with a nourishing lip balm.

Year-Round Essentials:

Regardless of the season, let's remember these key habits:

  • Hydration: Drink plenty of water throughout the year.
  • Gentle Cleansing: Avoid harsh cleansers that strip your skin's natural oils.
  • Balanced Diet: Nourish your skin from within with a healthy diet.
  • Adequate Sleep: Allow your skin to repair and regenerate overnight.

By adapting your skincare routine to the seasonal changes in your hemisphere, you can keep your skin healthy, radiant, and balanced year-round.
